A proud East Hampton house that was actually built in Sag Harbor on the present-day site of the Stella Maris school and moved decades ago. The venerable building needed gentle—but quite significant—refinements at its present location. The house, including an added wing, stands at the highest point on the property. Over time, it had come to look austere and detached in its relations to visitors and to the land. A new dynamic was established with the creation of a level space at the front entrance, bolstered by a fieldstone retaining wall and linked gently to the wider lawn by stone steps. Protection from the road was achieved with shade-tolerant, deer-resistant plantings. More dramatically, the rear yard was entirely re-programmed so as to encompass pool, pergola, and outdoor dining spaces.
